At EUSC we love where we sail and so in order to do our bit to protect it, this year we will be taking part in The Green Blue Sustainability Challenge! Sailing can be detrimental to the environment through spreading non-native species, the impact of litter (for example when you capsize and lose your favourite water bottle!), fuel spillages, and through creating unnecessary waste. As part of this challenge, we aim to reduce our environmental impact, and also help to spread the word about how you can do the same.
About the Challenge
Set up in 2005 by the RYA and British Marine, The Green Blue aims to promote sustainable boating and watersports for all water users. By teaming up with the British University Sailing Association, it has created a challenge which helps university sailing clubs to implement sustainable practices into their club activities. There are 21 university clubs entered in the challenge, but we plan on being the best!
We can’t wait to get involved, and will be undertaking some of the following actions in order to ensure that our sailing is as sustainable as possible:
- Tackling littering and reducing our own waste at sailing sessions and events by using reusable water bottles and cutlery and recycling
- Promoting the Clean, Check, Dry process to prevent the cross-contamination of invasive non-native species via boats and kit
- Tackling oil spills by ensuring that spill kits and instructions on how to use them are available at our sessions
- Promoting general awareness of sustainability in sailing through our website, social media and sustainability resources at the club.
